Before the installation of hybrid reactive power compensation systems, no compensation equipment was installed at the facility’s feeders. Detailed measurements revealed that the reactive power demand was highly dynamic – without stabilization, with frequent transient spikes and sudden changes. The reactive power was inductive in nature and fluctuated between 30 and 140 kVAr.
Problem
The facility incurred significant costs due to the reactive power component, while standard solutions were not considered due to their low efficiency.
Solution
Considering the situation, it was decided to install a hybrid (thyristor-based) reactive power compensation system, more suitable for dynamic compensation. Two 180 kVAr hybrid (thyristor-based) systems were implemented, each consisting of 50 kVAr and 30 kVAr thyristor-switched stages and a 100 kVAr Static Var Generator (SVG). These solutions ensured fast and accurate reactive power compensation and significantly reduced reactive power costs.
